Taraji P. Henson Bio
Taraji Penda Henson is an American actress, singer and writer. Her professional career began in 1997 when she played “Aida” in one of the episodes of the television series “The Parent” Hood, which earned her a Black Movie Award nomination. She was nominated for an “Oscar” for “Best Supporting Actress” for writing the character of “Queenie” in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”.
Taraji P. Henson was born on September 11, 1970 in Washington, D.C., USA, to Boris Lawrence Henson and Bernice Gordon. In the Swahili language, her name “Taraji” means hope and the second name “Penda” means love.
She father was a metalworker and his mother was a business executive. Her parents separated when she was only two years old. She is related to the late explorer Matthew Henson.
She wanted to study at the “Duke Ellington School for the Arts” in Washington, but she was not admitted to the institute. After the setback, she moved to Oxon Hill High School, where she graduated in 1988.
She studied electrical engineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. After her failure in preliminary calculus, she was transferred to Howard University to study theater.
Career
In 2015 it hosted an episode of “Saturday Night Live”. On March 16, 2015 it hosted the show “Live! with Kelly and Michael ‘in the absence of Kelly Ripa.
In addition to movies and TV series, it can also be seen in music videos. Some of the music videos she has appeared in are “Testify” and “Stay”.
In 2016 she played the character of a mathematician named Katherina Johnson in the biographical drama “Hidden Figures”, for which she won the “BET Award”, the “NAACP Image Award” and the “MTV Movie Award”.
In 2018 she took part in films such as “Proud Mary” and “Acrimony”. In the same year she voiced the character of “Yesss” in the hit 3D computer animation film “Ralph Breaks the Internet”.
In 2019 she starred opposite Tracy Morgan and Aldis Hodge in the commercially successful film “What Men Want”. She was also seen in the drama “The Best of Enemies”.
